Getting to the Heart of It: Why We Started Cocoro Japan

Hi there! We’re Moe (pronounced like the Moët champagne) and Tom—founders of Cocoro Japan—and we’d love to tell you a little more about who we are, why we started this travel agency, and what it means to us.

Cocoro (kokoro / 心) is directly translated to heart— but more often used for the emotion or mind of someone. We interpret it as sincerely, a chance to sincerely create the best trip we can for anybody going to Japan. That’s what this project is for us: a dream come true, shaped by our love for Japan and the joy of sharing it with others.

A Little About Us

We met in 2019 in the Netherlands, when Moe came to do an exchange at the same university where Tom was studying full-time. But our connection to Japan goes back further. Tom did his own exchange in Japan and later returned to work there. Moe, born and raised in Japan, began her career at JTB—Japan’s largest travel agency—while Tom took on an internship at Tokyo Ramen Tours (yes, the ramen obsession is real) and later worked as an English teacher. We lived in Japan together until 2022 and now call the Netherlands home.

While Tom didn’t have love at first sight with Japan back in 2018, something changed as we traveled together. Moe helped him see the deeper layers of Japan—the small details, the hospitality, the way everything has meaning. And through Tom’s eyes, Moe started to see her home country with a fresh perspective. That mix of insider knowledge and wide-eyed wonder has shaped how we travel—and how we help others travel too.

Why We Started Cocoro Japan

Starting our own travel agency was something we talked about for years but didn’t dare to leap into. But as Moe built up experience creating tailor-made trips, we kept exploring Japan ourselves, and little by little, the idea became a reality. We launched Cocoro Japan with one goal: to help people experience Japan the way we did—not just through the highlights, but through the genuine, unforgettable moments in between.

What We Believe In

We believe Japan is not just a destination to cross off your list. It’s a place that invites you in—if you let it. That’s why we focus on tailor-made travel. Everyone is different, and no two trips should be the same. Whether it’s soaking in a hot spring town you’ve never heard of, tasting something amazing at a tiny neighborhood izakaya, or simply slowing down in the mountains of Shikoku—these are the experiences we want to help you find.

We put a lot of care into each itinerary. You’ll always talk directly to one of us, and never be handed off. From the moment you contact us, we aim to provide the same level of hospitality that makes Japan so special. We work with trusted local partners, offer 24/7 emergency support while you travel, and make sure the quality of hotels, transport, and experiences meets our own high standards—even for mid-range budgets.

Our Style

We return to Japan every year to stay connected with the country we love and to keep discovering. Some of our favorite places? Kyushu’s volcanic landscapes, Hokkaido’s wild nature, and the slow rhythm of Shikoku. We love the iconic sights too—but what excites us most are the little surprises you won’t find in every guidebook.

Also, food. Food is a big part of how we travel—and how we plan. From ramen and yakitori to fresh seafood in Hokkaido or tiny soba shops in the countryside, we believe great meals are one of the best ways to experience Japan.

Let’s Travel Differently

Our favorite travelers are the curious ones. The people who want to see Japan’s famous spots, sure—but are also open to going a bit off the path, trying something new, and getting a little closer to the real Japan. If that’s you, we’d love to help you plan a trip that reflects your interests and style—one that you’ll always remember.

We hope that after traveling with us, you’ll love Japan as much as we do.

Thanks for reading and being here with us.

Mata ne,

Moe & Tom
